Biography

Áine Mallon (b.1994)  is an award winning, Irish composer. Her music engages with the fundamental human experience of storytelling and has been described as “Traditional yet fresh and new” (- John Rutter CBE).

She has quickly made a name for herself as a sought after composer of both Irish folk and Contemporary Classical music, and is frequently commissioned by ensembles and institutions from within both genres.

Her recent commissions see her working with world class ensembles and soloists such as the Irish Chamber Orchestra, National Youth Choir of Great Britain, Chamber Choir Ireland, New Dublin Voices, Fidelio Trio, Dumbworld, the ORA Singers. With previous commissions and performances from the Norwegian Soloists Choir, Manchester Chamber Choir, Kirkos Ensemble, the Irish Youth Training Choir, the Psappha Ensemble, Hard Rain Soloist Ensemble, the Piatti Quartet and Michael Mc Hale.

Her music has been performed in festivals throughout the UK, Ireland and Europe such as the Aldeburgh Festival, New Music Dublin, Cork International Choral Festival, KlangHaus, Ulm (Germany), the Unboxed Festival, West Cork Chamber Music Festival, Clifden Arts Festival, Icon Arts Festival (Romania), Dublin Culture Night; and in venues across Ireland and the UK such as Henry Wood Hall, London; the National Concert Hall of Ireland; the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester.

Áine’s most recent works have been an exciting exploration into character and narrative focused work,  whilst engaging with audiences in a unique and captivating way. Her recent ‘Choose Your Own Adventure Operetta’ entitled ‘Carbon Women’ was commissioned by The Nerve Centre and Dumbworld, and premiered at the ‘Our Place in Space’ Unboxed Festival in March 2023 and sold out every performance. 

Áine has been the recipient of many prestigious awards and prizes from distinguished organisations across the UK and Europe. Having been selected as an Artist in Residence at the Centre Culturel Irlandais for November 2024, she lived and worked in Paris, completing a large scale commission for the Irish Chamber Orchestra. The same year, she was also chosen as an Emerging Professional Artist for the National Youth Choir of Great Britain and commissioned to compose two pieces for the 18-25 Choir and the Fellowship Ensemble.

In 2020/2021, Áine was selected as an ‘Emerging Composer’ with the Contemporary Music Centre of Ireland; of which she now retains status as an Associate Composer. She was also selected for the Psappha Ensemble ‘Composing For’ scheme to create and record a new work with members of Psappha, 2021 and was also a recipient of the 2018 ‘Emerging Artists Award’ from nationally acclaimed organisation Moving on Music.

Áine was selected the winner of the 2019 ORA Singers Composer competition and audience prize by a panel of esteemed judges. Conducted by Suzi Digby OBE and sung by the award winning ORA Singers, Áine’s “imaginative and folk inspired reflection touched the hearts of the judges and audience members alike.”
