ARBOREAL Premiere and Performances

I’m on my way to Tipperary to hear my new piece ARBOREAL at Finding a Voice Festival, Clonmel! The piece received its premiere last week at FUAIM, UCC and I’m really excited to hear it live! Arboreal, meaning relating to trees, depicts mother trees sending messages, warnings and nutrition to their offspring and other trees within the forest via the Mycelial Network. The wooden sounds of prepared marimba and viola weave the story of the forests. Huge thank you so CMC Ireland for commissioning the work and to Alex Petcu and Nathan Sherman for performing it beautifully with such dedication and flair. There will be a couple more performances throughout the UK and Ireland next year – watch this space! https://www.cmc.ie/events/2023/mar/finding-voice-festival-nathan-sherman-alex-petcu-stories-dialogues-featuring-new-music-siobhan   Áine x

Carbon Women; a Choose Your Own Adventure Operetta

My new interactive, live operetta where a classic Greek myth is re-written in the stars is taking to the stage on 25 and 26 March (1.15pm and 4pm). This is the story of Cassiopeia and Andromeda and how they came to be star constellations. It’s one of the countless archetypes with similar solidified gender roles; ‘wicked’ mothers who wrong their offspring, ‘innocent, helpless’ daughters, and ‘heroic men’ — who always save the day. In this operatic retelling, the audience will take responsibility, making choices for Cassiopeia and Andromeda depending on what they want to see happen. The booking link is below! Huge thank you to Dumbworld and the Nerve Centre for commissioning and producing this wonderful project! https://ourplaceinspace.ticketsolve.com/ticketbooth/shows/1173640464   Áine x

‘Cund’ World Premiere

My new piece ‘Cund’ receives it’s World Premiere this Saturday 22nd October at the Filarmonica de Stat Sibiu at 5pm (UTC+ 1). It was composed as part of an incredible residency programme with @ICon, in partnership with the @cmc. My piece is for solo accordion and percussion ensemble, and based on the beautiful St Nicholas’ Church, Cund. The description of the programme is below along with the streaming link.   “The story begins with the six composers from Romania, Europe and the USA who traveled in search of new sources of inspiration. They visited the heritage villages and learned from the locals legends inherited from their ancestors, and then shared the experience in the ICon Arts creative laboratory. They encountered in each fortified church emotions prepared to exist for eternity, imprinted in paintings, decorations, mysterious staircases, in fairy-tale windows, bells, symbols and medieval coats of arms. Together they triggered a certain state of inevitable contemplation, conducive to the act of creation in its most authentic manifestations. The composers thus took over the living memory of a central detail which they metamorphosed into shapes and heights dedicated to a solo instrument. Six new pieces and as many universes, apparently limited in time, infinite in intention, resulted. On Saturday, 11 artists will perform under the inspiration of the towns of Biertan, Copșa Mare, Cund, Valea Viilor, Cloașterf and Mălâncrav.”   Event Page / Streaming Link: https://fb.me/e/3B1LcEaVI

Residency in Transylvania with ICon Arts

I feel incredibly privileged to have spent a week in August travelling around Transylvania as a Composer in Residence for the ICon Arts Festival. I have learned so much about the history of this region of Romania from some of the warmest and kind people I have ever met. The political and cultural history of Transylvania is so rich, and it is so beautiful to see many traditional customs still practiced today. The Saxon Fortified Church in Cund is the subject of my piece for the festival. I cannot express how much I enjoyed staying in this small village and getting to know the place and its people. It reminded me of the importance of slowing down, savouring small moments, and having an appreciation for how kind humans can be. My new piece based on St Nicholas’ Church in Cund will be performed in Filarmonica de stat Sibiu in Autumn 2022. It will then be recorded and installed in the Church as a sound installation for visitors. Watch this space for updates! Áine x
